What is High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a very common disorder where the blood moves through the arteries at an abnormally high pressure. A normal blood pressure is read as 120/80. The first number (120) is the systolic blood pressure. This is the peak blood pressure when the heart squeezes blood out. The other number (80) is the diastolic blood pressure. This is the pressure when the heart fills with blood. A person is said to have high blood pressure when the reading is 140/90 or higher.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure damages the blood vessels which increase the risk of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.
